Small Business Becomes Big Target

Do you believe your organization has an effective and comprehensive cyber security plan? Don’t bet on it. Eight in 10 small-businesses with less than 250 workers don’t have a basic cyber-attack incident response plan, even though a majority was hit by cyber crimes.

With today’s technology making information highly convenient and accessible, smart organizations are taking a big picture approach to their cyber security and preparing for a multitude of worse-case scenarios so they are able to quickly detect and mitigate a breach when it occurs.

Many small companies don’t think that they are a target for a cyber breach, as they feel that they do not have the sensitive information a hacker would be interested in. What they fail to realize is they have become an easy target to cyber hackers.

FBI Sees Massive Increase in Espionage, Including Industrial Espionage, Against the US The FBI on Thursday issued a press release discussing what they believe is an increasing threat of economic espionage against US companies. They estimate that such espionage may cost the US as much as "hundreds of billions" of dollars a year. This espionage is not just directed against large industrial companies, but any place where trade secrets and innovations might be found, including third-party organizations (e.g. business partners, vendors, consultants, lawyers, etc.) affiliated with targeted companies. Ransomware Observed to Jump from One Device to Another via the Cloud Researchers described last week an incident where they observed malicious "ransomware" propagating from one device to another via cloud-based file synchronization. When the ransomware encrypted files on one machine that synchronized files to a specific folder, it spread to other PCs that synchronized to that same folder.
